New Work 2

When I was in Austria years ago, studying with Phil Rubinov-Jacobson, I began this piece on board with ink washes to complete in the Mische painting technique (Egg tempera and oil).
It is a re-working of my drawing 'Sacred Wisdom'.
The mische painting didn't eventuate, so recently I continued to work with inks, then scan and finish it digitally (using the same principles of building up layers of white highlights under transparent glazes of soft colour.)

The Gift 2011

  1. This is very wonderful! I love the multilayered approach you used. It turned out excellent. And, so creative! I see some figures here that I noticed in another work or two of yours. The masked figure in the bottom left I think I saw in "'Pliny's Nereid" and some others look slightly familiar. Do elements such as this figure have some significance and are your paintings part of a large artistic narrative perhaps?

  2. Hi Joe,
thank you for your comments. As it turns out, I am currently reworking it again as an acrylic painting, so there will be even more details and layers in the next version. Yes the masked figure was an addition in this piece and as you mentioned is also in Pliny’s Nereid. Most of my drawing works are a part of my ‘inner’ narrative, I am still unravelling meanings to me with lots of them,as I try not to over think why, what or who they are as I create, so that wether I like it or not, there is freedom in ‘what comes out’ without conscious editing during the creative process. But having said that, in this painting/re-working from 'Sacred Wisdom’, the masked figure has been consciously placed and I do think this figure (and the others) are part of my own feminine narrative, the mask itself is originally from my drawing 'Cycle of the moon', and she is a strength figure. The figure under the mask in ’The Gift' and 'P N’ is like the dreamer/healer/creative/manifestor, she is a representation or link to the 'upper world'. I also used the ’third eye extension’ from my drawing ‘Mercurious' to give another dimension to the gentle bird figure in ‘The Gift’.
    Cheers
    Kim
